When you’re a space manager, giving the green light to space requests is part of what you do.
Sometimes you have to put the brakes on requests, too!
With these things in mind, how can a traffic light system help you weigh up your incoming space demands?

This is something we teach on our
Space Management Basecamp Level 1 course.
When a space request comes in, a traffic light system can help you say ‘yes, this is do-able’ or ‘this needs more planning before it can happen’.
Say, for example, a new research project is about to kick off and you need to find labs and workspaces for a team of 20 research staff. They need on-campus accommodation too.
Split the request into categories, such as
timeframe and
cost.
Then give each category a colour:
✔️Green if the request looks do-able
✔️Amber if you foresee minor problems
✔️Red if you anticipate major issues.
For example, you might end up marking
timeframe green, because the research project kicks off in 12 months’ time. But marking
cost amber, because the budget is yet to be signed off by the leadership time.
There’s a much more detailed process behind this system, which we walk you through on the course using real-life examples. At the end, you come away with a clear structure for evaluating space requests - and a simple yet effective way to present feedback to your key stakeholders too.
Discovering easier ways to handle space requests is just one reason to join our Space Management Basecamp Level 1 course. You’ll come away with frameworks to help you solve space scenarios and collect, analyse and model space data - learning alongside peers from universities all around the UK too.
