When we first started working with Escentral, we were nothing more than a room booking service. With help from some fantastic Escentral colleagues, over recent years we have become a professional timetabling service.

Many of our team have undertaken the Basecamp qualification, and our team regularly attend the insightful training sessions offered through the Timetabling Academy. These sessions go beyond the basics, and it is clear the subjects have been careful considered to give help where staff on the ground need it most, and to provide clarity and guidance on topical issues. Empowered staff means our retention is at an all-time high, when previously we were suffering from a revolving door of colleagues moving on and had perpetual vacancies.

We have had several consultants working with us, including: Amy, who led the team of consultants working with us as Timetabling Officers during a period of dire staffing levels, and trained us all on our timetabling database so that we could utilise functionality we didn’t even know existed; and Louise & Sam, who are expert timetablers and actually can achieve the impossible through their tactful negotiation and extensive experience. Temporary or contractual staff we’ve taken on over the years have often appeared not to care, however the Escentral colleagues we have worked with have thrown themselves in with an enthusiasm I couldn’t have anticipated. They truly have become part of the team.

During our time working with Escentral we have been able to deliver personalised student timetables, and will now be able to use timetable data for attendance monitoring, ensuring UKVI compliance. Our data is now robust enough for us to report accurately from our timetabling system, ultimately saving us money as we are no longer making staffing and rooming decisions blind. Prior to Escentral’s support the relationship between Timetabling and our academic colleagues was at an all-time low, but thanks to Amy, Louise and Sam that trust has been rebuilt.

We are currently tapering to soon end our working relationship with Escentral, but to say we are in a better position now than we were when they joined us is a massive understatement. Finally Timetabling is recognised and respected as the professional skill that it is, and the whole university has benefitted as a result.
